We have run some "Boot Camps" (tutorial games specifically for new players) in the past and it might be time to run another. Here is the description from a previous Boot Camp but we have since shortened the format to fit in a single session. Please post to this thread if something like this interests you.
These events are a two-part series designed to introduce new players to D&D 4e. The goal of D&D 4e Beginner's Boot Camp is to instill enough knowledge and confidence into new players that they are willing to take the "leap" and sign-up for a real game. Part 1 Outline: * Overview of D&D 4e and RPG's in general * How to read the sample Character Sheets (then pick a character) * Brief explanation of each character's Powers, Skills and Feats * Brief explanation of Combat Sequence * How to identify and read dice (especially those wierd d4s!) * Play an easy 2-encounter "mini adventure" to put it all together * Answer any questions you might have Part 2 Outline: * Brief explanation of Races, Classes and Roles * Create your own character (on a standard character sheet) * Play a challenging 3-encounter "mini adventure" to test yourself * How to "level-up" your character * Answer any questions you might have Please bring (all are recommended but optional): * Paper and Pencil (or pen) * Selection of dice (d20, d6, etc.) * D&D 4e Player's Handbook * Snacks and/or Drinks (nothing sticky or messy, please) * Miniature representing your character (for Part 2 only) |

Yes please! And I'd like to bring a guest if that's okay, he's not new to D&D but new-ish to 4E

Ok, it's on the Calendar.
If the date/time does not work for you please RSVP "No" with alternative date/time suggestions. If less than 3 people RSVP "Yes" I will postpone the Boot Camp and try again another month; not necessarily the next month. Edited by DiceWrangler on Jul 21, 2009 6:43 PM |

Hi Scott --
Since we just joined the group, and we are fairly new to 4e, a boot camp would be great, if you're still interested in running them. I would have 2 participants, myself (Jen) and my husband (Michael). A question: would our current newbieness prevent us from joining any of the LFR events that are scheduled before we can attend a Boot Camp? Michael has played older versions of D&D, and I've played other games (Shadowrun) and have listened to play on the D&D podcasts, so I'm somewhat familiar with the mechanics already. We obviously wouldn't want to slow down play excessively, so if n00bs would be a problem we'd like to know before we sign up for an event. We're excited to get started, let us know when it might run. You can join any LFR game that is for level 1-4 characters. No one minds if a game gets slowed down a little because of people who are new to the game, it's nice to get fresh blood. :) You might want to download the free trial version of the character creator (www.wizards.com/dnd) to make sure you build a character that is legal for LFR (dice rolls for stats aren't really used anymore).

Great! We've got the builder and have a couple of characters each-now we just have to find an open session to attend and we'll be all set.

I'm really hoping you can put together another bootcamp, as my wife just agreed to learn this crazy hobby of mine and I'd like for it to be a pleasant, welcoming experience and not either boring or hostile - the boot camp sounds perfect for it, and it would let me make sure that all my book-learnin' was fleshed out with some actual table time.

We have only been playing for a few weeks, and I can attest that everyone is very welcoming of new players. Any LFR game for 1-4th level characters would be a great place to start. The games are one-offs, so they're great for getting to know some of your other meetup companions. You do have to be quick, though, games fill up fast. =) So you might be able to get by without the bootcamp... |
