When RSVPing to an event, please consider the following:

1. If you're not sure you can attend, please do not RSVP with a "yes". Instead, RSVP with a no, but indicate that you are checking your schedule and might be able to make it. Reserving a spot just in case you can make it isn't all that fair to folks that can definitely make it. We've seen a few occasions where somebody whose schedule was iffy forgot to change their "yes" to a "no", and the person who really wanted to and was able to come had to miss out.

2. When RSVPing, please note the location. We're using quite a few locations for the games now.

3. When RSVPing, please note the start time. Start times are generally when we'd like for the games to actually start. Showing up a little early guarantees an on-time start. In fact, planes load early so that they can have an on-time departure. Please have the same courtesy for game start times. 15 minutes early is just about right, especially if we have to muster more than one table.

4. Everybody runs late sometimes. If you are doing so, please call either the store or the DM to let them know. The store phone numbers are listed for each event. If a game is at someone's house, the hosts phone number is listed.

5. If you know ahead of time that you have to either arrive late or leave early, please do not sign up. This disrupts the game significantly. Note that most games run about 4 hours.

6. Please answer the questions related to the event. Often the question is about your character, but sometimes it is about something else. The questions wouldn't be asked if the answer wasn't important in some way.

I feel a little weird that some of this stuff even needs to be mentioned and I wouldn't do so if these things happened infrequently or occasionally. They're happening more and more often. So please be considerate of your fellow gamers.

Thanks,
Linda

Sadly, we are still experiencing frequent No-Shows. In attempt to combat this, expect some future events to have a required event fee that is to be pre-paid via PayPal. Refunds will be made if you change your RSVP to "No" 24+ hours before the event, to give someone else a chance to re-arrange their schedule, but not after that. I recommend that everyone setup a PayPal account if you do not have one already.

I really have no interest in setting up a PayPal account, especially just to be allowed to show up to a DnD game. =/.

Will this be refundable if you do show up, if not how will the money be used?

Refunded if you show up? No, it is not intended as a "deposit" to punish people who do not show (other than they lose their pre-payment) but 1) to raise money for the Meetup (which costs us $12/month) and 2) to encourage more people to DM by giving them a token amount -- yet a material reward -- as a "thank you."

The amount I was thinking of was something like $3 or $4 per person which is what you would typically pay at a gaming convention -- not including the convention "pass." Note that PayPal itself has a minimal transaction fee (something like 35c?) so there is some loss.

(back to rant mode for a minute; sorry if I am repeating myself)

Too many people have been blowing off games recently which wasted the time of everyone else that attended -- especially the DM who prepared for it -- because there was not enough players for a (LFR) "legal" table or disappointed the next person on the waiting list that really wanted to go but could not because the game was allegedly "full." angry

We do keep track of attendence so I am tempted to just put the No-Showers on a "probation list" -- for a month -- by moving their "Yes" RSVPs to the waiting list thus allowing others an opportunity to get into a game that would have otherwise been "full."

I have no problem paying for games once and a while to pay for the site, I basically just don't like paypal.

The primary reason I mentioned PayPal is that Meetup has specific built-in options for it and, AFAIK, it is the only e-payment system that Meetup supports. The event organizer has the option to designate a specific RSVP as "Paid" so using PayPal is not a requirement, just a convenience.
