started way back with the red d&d basic boxed set. moved on to 1st ed., then 2nd. never got into 3rd, really. stopped playing b/c all my friends reprioritized the game out of their lives (necessity perhaps).
realism and consistency in a rule system and in the world itself, from players to economies, political systems, combat, etc. role playing, mysteries, puzzle-solving, free-form adventuring (where the DM permits and encourages players to step outside the pages of a canned module and make their own story through their choices and the DMs improvisational imagings...really every aspect of the game.
