Have you seen the RPG Superstar contest over at Paizo? It's a really cool idea. They're conducting successive rounds with writing challenges that lead up to the winner being awarded a contract to write a module for Paizo. They started with a challenge to the community to write up a unique, original, Wonderous Item.

I wonder what our community can come up with if we were to have our very own challenge. Let's try....

Paizo rules:

To enter, submit an original wondrous item using the format outlined in the 3.5 SRD (available online at www.d20srd.org). The entry must be no more than 200 words and must include all of the proper mechanics and flavor (see here for examples). Entries must be written in the English language, using correct spelling and grammar.

Fair warning: any post you make that explains or adds to, or any discussion you contribute to about your item counts towards your word limit, which most certainly would put you out of consideration. Feel free to thank others for their comments and feedback. Just resist the urge to talk about your item. Okay? Oh, and last thing... to be considered you have to certify that the item you're submitting is your own idea and that you're willing to let others use the idea under the same terms as the OGL (Open Gaming License.)

Post your items in response and in two weeks (the 21st) I'll create a poll or something to sort out a way for you all to vote on which items are best and maybe I'll give the winner a prize at the January Meetup meeting on the 25th. I have this $20 set of Q-Workshop dice still to give away, after all.

So, no takers? Even with a nifty, $20 dice set in the offing? Deadline is this Friday, at the meeting.

Okay, new tack. Now you can complete this challenge and any who do, and who submit a entry accepted under the rules set forth will receive an XP award equal to that of running an event at a meeting as a GM (i.e. 4 points, vs 1 point that players get). So, sharpen those pencils and make for us a nice magic item and boost the power of your Meetup.com Kalamazoo D&D character!

Well, if there are no takers I might give this a try. Initially the thought of winning the chance of designing a mod sounded more like winning work as a prize. And I have been wracking my brain trying to come with material for my sci-fi short story series, so more work just didn't sound like funtongue.
I'll have to look over the rules and see what I can come up with.

I wasn't ever going to make the prize a chance to work more. I had a set of new dice in the offing as a prize to start with, but no takers. Now the prize is increased experience just for submitting a valid entry and the extra XP will help you win prizes and stuff in upcoming events.
