About The Austin Dungeons & Dragons Meetup Group

Austin D&D Meetup is a fun and easy way for local gamers to gather, meet each other, recruit players for "home" games or simply to socialize. Players are encouraged to play in different groups thereby getting to know everyone and experiencing the various Game Master play styles, campaigns, etc.

What you should bring to play:

  • PEN AND PAPER
  • EASY TO READ DICE
  • 3.5 CORE RULE BOOKS (PLAYERS GUIDE, DM GUIDE, MONSTER MANUAL)
  • A MINIATURE
  • GAME MASTERS, a short adventure (aka 1-shot) to challenge your fellow gamers with.

Rules:
Point Buy Character Creation
Saga Style (SWSE aka closer to what 4ed might be like) Sword & Sorcery conversion

Getting an Austin area game started

[This originated from a post to our forums by Doogie. Other suggestions and ideas are welcomed (hit edit and add them!)

Location:
If you don't want to play at someone's house several of the local game stores have tables and space for people to run games. Definitely view the store's calendar and contact them to determine when they are not overcrowded.

DMing:
One of the biggest problems sometimes is that people want to play and not DM or don't think they are cut out for it. A couple of ways to resolve this is to implement a DM Rotation system so that everyone gets to play. Either do a series of modules and then switch or switch back and forth every time you get together. You can get 2 or 3 campaigns running and everyone gets to play. Finally, grab some modules I recommend any of the new Wizard's supermodules, Paizo's Shackled City, or go to one of the local game shops to browse their selection.

Getting players:
It's usually not enough to just post. But do post place and time for your game. It also helps to describe a bit about the campaign & gamemaster, what sort of playstyle(hack'n'slash, hvy rp, etc). Then keep showing up, you'll be surprised to see that people will show up eventually. Also, check out the available players, message each other, attend meetups to announce your game and recruit players, perhaps even run a 1-shot to give them a taste and make them hunger for more. Don't get discouraged! Some people will play and leave but there will always be those that will stay and eventually you'll have a stable running group.

Good Luck! Game on!
